Cancel and re-use license

R

Ron Carr

A non-profit I work with has 4 licenses for Word: all licaneses have been
used up in the past, but there remains only one staff member who actually
uses a licensed copy. Naturally we have a new staff member who needs one! How
do I cancel one or more of the old licenses so I can re-assign?

Hi Ron:

All you need to do is run the Remove Office tool to remove the application
from the machines that no longer use it.

You don't "actually" have to do even that, but it is a good idea to do so.

Then install one of the UNUSED licences to the new machine.

Office checks at startup to ensure that its licence is not being used
elsewhere. If it is, Office will tell you that the licence is already in
use somewhere else and quit.

Hope this helps

I guess I should have expanded the explanation by saying that the other
licenses are no longer in the office and we don't know where they are. Past
employees/board members used them on their own personal computers. Any
solution to that?
Thans!

Hi Ron:

Officially, "No". They can still use the software, so you are not allowed
to.

You cannot remotely "disable" another user's licence :)

You should buy new licences. And if you are an "honest" company, you will
do that.

However, you 'could' try installing one of the supposedly-unused licences
and see if you get a problem.

You will not be "legal". But you may not be "caught". Which is more
important -- saving money, or being an ethical business? :)

Cheers

depends upon whether he is a *Big Business* or a *Small Business*. A
*big* business tends to want to save money. ;-)

That's why its incumbent on them to be extra ethical other wise they may
get sued and lose more of that money they don't have. ;-)

Big business has enough bucks to buy the right lawyers to wear the other
side down , where they cry Uncle say just let it go. ;-)
