Canceled recurring appointments continue to show up on attendees c

I canceled a recurring appointment with attendee. He accepted the
cancellation. Meeting still showed up on a calendar after a few months.
Checked resource scheduling and there are no automatic acceptances, etc.
Version: Outlook 2003.
