Canceling a project

I have a project that has been canceled mid-way through executing my plan.
I use enterprise resources to balance allocations between projects on the
server & show availability.
Is there a feature, or methodology to cancel the project such that my
resources will be freed, from their allocations on the canceled project's
tasks after the cancelation date?
Ideally, I'd like to be able to retain their allocations up until the
cancelation date to show historically what they worked on, and be able to
analyze performance up till cancellation of the project.
