Cancelled Tasks

I am using Project 2003 SP3.

I have tasks showing up in timesheets which have been deleted from project.
They do not have a black x beside them and are not being removed when I run
an SQL server script. These tasks have remaining work listed.

What is the reasoning for this and how do I go about fixing it?

These are likely orphaned tasks with assignments that were not properly
closed out before the task was deleted or the resource was removed. The
quickest cure is to save the project as an mpp file to the local drive,
delete it from the server, import the file back to the server and use
Collaborate > Publish > Republish all assignments to restore the plan to
PWA.

Thank you. Would reducing hours to zero before removing resources or
deleting tasks alleviate this problem?

Also, do actuals remain unaffected if I do this?
