In MS Project 2000 how do I show a task is cancelled but

There is no formal method, but you could set the duration to zero and add a
note that it was cancelled.

Dear Jack,

Thank you vary much for responding.

For MS Project 2002 or 2003 do you know if their is a
formal way to cancel a task.

Thanks for your help

No.
Either delete or mark it done. That is about it.
You could move it to another part of the schedule I suppose.

If you are using Project Server 2002 or 2003, you should consider using the
following procedure to cancel tasks in an enterprise project:

1. Select the tasks to be cancelled
2. Click the Assign Resources dialog
3. Select the assigned resources in the dialog
4. Click the Remove button
5. Click Collaborate - Publish - All Information

Completing the first series of steps will cancel the assignments for the
resources and will cancel e-mail reminders about the assignment for the
cancelled tasks. Once you have done this, you could use the procedure that
Jack has detailed. Hope this helps.

Another idea:

Add a custom flag task field to the project, named "Cancelled" or something. Include the flag in the view and set it to "Yes" at the cancelled tasks. This allows you to filter and/or reporting cancelled tasks.

If you are using Project Server, you should do what Dale stated, in order to eliminate the assignments.

Greetings.
