cannot access contact list from new message

When I open a new message and click on "to" I cannot access any of the the
naes in my contact list. Both the Outlook Address Book and personal Address
Book show no entries, even though I have hundresd of entries in my contact
list. I also run into tthe same problem when trying to create a new
distribution list.

How do I access my contact list from a new message or new distribution list?

what do you see under the Show Names From list in the address book dialog?
