cannot access/delete redundant ARCHIVE folders in Outlook 2003

After upgrading to Outlook 2003, I now have two Archive folders listed which
I cannot access so I cannot even see the properties of these folders. The
folders do not show up in Data File Management so I don't know why they
appear in the folder list in Outlook. I want to delete them and create a new
Archive folder that really works like it is suppose to. I still have the
archive pst file so I assume the data is still good. The SCANPST and SCANOST
tools say that all is fine.

Hi,

What happens when you right click on the second archive folder and choose
'Close Archive folder'? Does it allow you to close it?
If not the profile in Outlook might have been corrupted if the pst files
have been moved around.

Try creating a new profile and access/open the necessary pst files from the
new profile.

I renamed the old archive pst file and now I can open both of the Archive
folders. When I right select on the folder and select properties, both
appear OK. However, if I select the Advanced button, an error window opens
saying
"The operation failed. An object could not be found." I don't understand
why Microsoft's application does not tell us which object could not be found.
Do they think we just enjoy guessing? Oh wll, I am still stuck with two
Archive folders with exactly the same information in both. When I move
something from one Archive folder, the item is moved from both so it appears
that there is only one Archive folder but it is listed twice.

Should I just put up with it?

Thanks for the response. I suppose it is problems like this that keep most
of my co-workers from upgrading to Office 2003 or XP Service Pack 2. The
programs just aren't "plug-n-play".

Can profiles be copied or will that also copy the problem?

Hi,

Copying a profile is not really recommended with these errors we get in
Outlook. It's always good that we start with a new profile without any
transfer/replication of the old profile.
And mostly these errors with the pst files do occur once in a while when the
pst files are moved around while Outlook settings points to the old location.

Thanks,

Mittu

Is there another way to remove this listed item without recreating the
entire profile? There should be an entry in the registry or something,
right? I deleted the associated file, but it wont go away in outlook and
doesn't show in the Data file Manager.

Thanks,

That's where the profile is. It's a lot easier to recreate the profile with
Control Panel's Mail applet than to get rid of th ghost folders, but if you
want to try, see this:

NEVER manipulate a PST that's part of mail profile from outside of Outlook
or you will damage your profile every time.
