cannot access header / footer

I have a Word 2008 document in which I cannot access headers or
footers even when clicking on "Header and Footer" in the View menu. I
have tried this from Page Layout view and from Draft view, and the
result is the same, which is that the document flickers but does not
go into the Header and Footer mode. In other Word 2008 documents, the
Header and Footer function in the View menu works, but not this one. I
input Page Numbers but they never showed up, and did this 2 or 3 more
times but the result was the same. This has caused some repeated kind
of code input into the footer which is visible when Field Codes is
turned on in Preferences. But I cannot access the footer to remove
them and still no page numbers are displayed.

Any idea how to fix this? I tried saving the document in other formats
such as .doc, rtf, and txt, but the result was the same.

Since you don't reveal the specifics I'd first have to suggest that you make
sure Office 2008 is fully updated to 12.1.5, but the fact that it's just the
one document suggests some degree of corruption, probably due to the H/F
content that's already there. It might be useful to know more about the
structure & origin of the document but the standard steps will most likely
correct the it. Unfortunately - as you've discovered -none of the steps
you've taken will resolve the problem. Have a look at the methods suggested

Check that the section you are in is not "Protected".

Look on the Tools menu: if you see "Unprotect document" that's it...

But I agree with CyberTaz, the document may well be corrupt, in which case
you need to copy the content into a fresh document. Make SURE you do not
copy the last paragraph mark, you you will copy the problem...
