Cannot access My Documents

Using Windows 98 I cannot access "My Documents." I can
get the screen with icons for all documents, but, when I
click an icon & then click "Open", I get no farther than
the Word 2000 screen "This product is licensed to ..."
when the computer freezes. I tried unistalling and
reinstalling Word, but with no great success. Help would
be greatly welcomed. Thanks,Frank
