Cannot add members from Active Directory

I can't add any members from active directory OU's. It shows that the
directory is synchronized so I don't believe that is the problem. When I add
members, the check box to select the member is greyed out (I can find them
with Search, but cannot actually add them) The audit log says that a UID is
required. I opened the directory settings and changed the UID to email, but
when I click apply it does not save. Any ideas?

Did you fill in the email adres in AD. If there is no Email adres stated in
AD for the user then checkbox will be grey out.
