Cannot add MY NETWORK PLACE from within Word 2002

I have Office 2002 on XP pro, when i try and add a
network place http://servername/share (A Sharepoint
server) i get the following error-
"Cannot connect to the web server
http://servername/share. The server could not be located,
or may be too busy to respond. Please check your typing
or check to make sure the web server is available."
I cann access it via Internet Explorer but not through
office packages.
We do have AD & GPO's in place here but they are newly
implemented to they may be the cause, howvere I would
like some advice if possible.
