Cannot address using nickname

I have upgraded from Office 2000 Pro to Office 2003. Now I cannot address new
messages using the nicknames on file in Contacts. I have tried to help myself
first...an MS Office Assistance doc entitled "Reset the nickname and
automatic completion cache" (Q287623) suggested renaming the .NK2 file, but I
do not seem to have one (yes, I can view hidden files), and Office does not
want to regenerate one. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Expected.
Outlook 2003 no longer uses a NICK file.
Nor can you upgrade from Outlook 2000 and have things work unless you create
a new profile from scratch.
Do so, then let Outlook create a new NK2 file from scratch as you send
messages.

Thanks for the info. So, is the process to export to file all my current
addresses, In-box folders, Calendar, etc.; blow out my current profile;
create a new profile; import back all my addresses and mail?

No. Please don't do that. Never import or export Outlook data unless you
want to lose it.
Just create a new profile and configure it to use your current Outlook data
file.

Hi Russ -
No, that still didn't work. I tried a variety of variations...my last
included copying out my .pst file and .dat file, blowing out everything in
the Outlook folder, rebooting, building a new account, copying in my .pst and
..dat, and attempting email to nickname. No go. According to everything I read
it should function. but it doesn't. Any other advice?

No. Please don't do that. Never import or export Outlook data unless you
want to lose it.
Just create a new profile and configure it to use your current Outlook data
file.

I see another thread running on this same topic...
and again I mention...I did have a new .NK2 file that created with the new
user profile. I moved the old outlook.pst file into place and Outlook still
did not find nicknames. I also tried removing the newly-created .NK2 file and
allowing a new one to be created but it still did not allow find nicknames. I
would really like to resolve this problem...if it can be resolved. Are there
major issues with 2003 that simply do not work no matter how much MS pretends
they do?

You are confused about how autocompletion works.
Autocompletion has nothing to do with your Contacts Folder. It uses a cache
of names from messages you have previously sent. You haven't sent any
messages so you have not populated your cache.
