Cannot always use "find" function

I am using Word 2000 under Windows 98 SE. My address book is a longish .doc
file. When I open this on Word I can use <Ctrl><F> "find" as usual but not
if I use a shortcut to "address.doc". Why can't I use a shortcut?

Can you be more specific about how it's not working? If you click on the
document after it's been opened from the shortcut, will Ctrl+F now work?
