cannot associate doc files with word 2007

I can open doc files with within word 2007 as long as word is already open,
however, I cannot oopen doc files by simply clicking on them. I have tried
to set the file associations correctly but word 2007 does not even come up as
an option to use, even using the browse option. I have tried repairing and
reinstalling the software to no avail. What am I missing??

If you can open Word 2007 on your computer, Word 2007 must be installed and
is therefore present on your computer. So when you go to set the file
association and choose Browse, you MUST be able to select Word 2007. Look
again.

Good point. Also, note that the file name is winword.exe and it should be in
the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 folder (unless a different
folder was chosen during the installation of course).

Sorry, I wasn't as clear as I should've been. When attempting to set the
file association, winword is there in office12 folder, however selecting it
has no effect. the screen reverts back to the associations page as if I had
indeed chosen a program, but nothing actually happens, word 2007 doesn't
appear in the associations box at all. It just will not let me select it.

That suggests that something is blocking writes to the registry. Have you
got some over-zealous firewall or utility installed?

No. Only thing going is windows defender. Running windows vista.

So far, that i have noticed that is, word 2007 seems to be the only program
doing tis. I've been able to switch other file associations with no trouble.

I've no idea why this won't associate correctly. I rarely ever suggest this
process because normally it is a total waste of time, but make sure you are
logged in a Administrator, then Uninstall Office. Reboot and log in as Admin
again, reinstall Office. Note that you will not lose any user settings.

Check the association again. Has this worked?

No luck. I've been throughthis process before, twice, but gave it another go
anyway, just in case. This has become rather irksome indeed. thanks for the
suggestions, as they're much appreciated.
