Cannot change cell formats in Excel 2008

Please help! I just installed Mac Office 2008 today, and when I try to apply a format to an entire column (ie, currency, etc.), the format for all rows/columns to the left of that column changes to the date format. I can't select a single cell to apply a format to, or copy a cell and apply it's format to another cell or a range -- nothing is working! Is this a bug, or is there something in preferences that I'm missing? Please help, I have an accounting project due and I need this asap!

Thanks,
Sarah

When you select a column, do columns to the left also get selected? Are you
using merged cells? If so, don't. Are you saying that the wrong format gets
applied? Which format are you trying to apply, and which gets applied
instead?
