Cannot change default number format for a page number

Peter Hofstee

Hello there,
I have a problem. In one of my documents the default number format for a
page number is - # -. I can change this manually in the header by adding \*
Arabic. No big deal.
But in the TOC I cannot choose the number format. It just chooses the
default, wich looks very ugly.
The problem is that I cannot find a way to change the default number format.
I'm running Office XP with the latest service packs.
I cannot find an article on this subject in the KB or with Google. So anyone
an idea?
Thanks,

Are you saying that you are getting the page number with hyphens on either
side? The only way I know of to do that (so that the hyphens are part of the
PAGE field) is to select the -1-, -2-, -3- format in the Page Number Format
dialog. If you'll change the page number format to 1, 2, 3, you can still
add the hyphens (or en dashes, which look nicer) manually if desired, but
they won't be part of the PAGE field.

Stefan,
I thought I did, but not quite right it turned out. I tried it again. What I
did was deleting the existing page number and adding a new one selecting
1,2,3 as number format. Updating the TOC and voilà the hyphens are gone.
Thanks for your clear observation.
And thanks for the help.

I suspect that just changing the page number format and then updating the
page numbers and TOC would have sufficed.
