Cannot change to bold/italic..

Hi,

For some reason (in Word 2003) I cannot change the font to bold or italic.
When I press the 'b' or 'i' button (or do ctrl+b or ctrl+i), the button does
get pressed down, but after a split second, it jumps back. Sometimes I do
manage to get the button pressed down, but then I cannot deactivate it.
Notice that it has nothing to do with my keyboard because I cannot even
toggle the bold/italic buttons with the mouse. The buttons behave the same
anyway. I feel like throwing the computer out of the window.

When you "turn on" Bold or Italic formatting, you are doing it at the
insertion point (where the cursor is) unless you have text selected. If you
continue to type at the insertion point, the text you type from that point
will be bold or italic. If you want to apply bold or italic formatting to
text you have already typed, you must select it first. If you're in Normal
view with "Draft font" enabled (Tools | Options | View), text will not
appear formatted but the buttons will reflect the formatting. Is any of this
information helpful?

"If you continue to type at the insertion point, the text you type from that

will be bold or italic."

No, that's exactly what it's NOT doing (thus being an application error).
I simply cannot "switch on" bold/italic/underlined. No matter if I click on
the buttons or press ctrl+b, ctrl+i etc. The button will only remain pressed
down for a split second, and "pop back up". That is, after pressing one of
the buttons (or using hotkeys) and continuing typing, the text will not be
bold/italic.
The only way to do it is to select the actual text I want to make
bold/italic and then press one of the keys (or hotkeys). Then again, if I
choose to add some more text to a, say, italic part, it's impossible to
switch it off. I have to copy/paste some "normal" text after it, and then
start writing over that.
I have been using word for years and never experienced anything like this
with the earlier versions. It has to be corrupt somehow.

Barring a virus, is the document protected with formatting restrictions?

Does the problem persist if you start in Safe Mode (using the /a switch or
holding down Ctrl while you start Word)?
