Cannot "Check for updates" from within Office applications

Hello,

Windows XPP SP2 (updated up to this week)
Office 2003 SP2
HP DX 6100, 3.2 Ghz, 4 Gb RAM

I just reinstalled my computer from scratch. Installed XPP and all updates,
Office 2003, and it completed fine. At the end it asked if I wanted to check
for updates; got logged on to the update page and updated everything the
main Office 2003 application. Fine. Installed thereafter Office Proofing
Tools, FrontPage, Visio Pro and One Note (all 2003). Now I can't update the
Office suite from within any of aforementioned applications. I can, however,
update by logging on to the Update page on the Office web site, and the
system updates fine. But what ever I try, I can't update from within any of
the applications.

I've shut down my firewall and anti virus (Symantec Client Security and
Norton AV). I've also configured IE Explorer 6 (6.0.2900) for automatic
download prompts (KB 883255), but no, the system will not update from within
any application.

I've been running Word, Excel and the Office applications since inception,
and the 2003 version since it became available. Never really had great
problems, apart from the usual strange behaviors, until some months ago,
when a) some of my fonts apparently got the hiccups (probably one of the
system fonts that died) and also this "update from within the Office
applications" problem, which was the reason for reinstalling the complete
computer.

It's no big problem, just a bit inconvenient, not being able to update the
Office applications while in an application.

Any ideas?

Grateful for any suggestions.

Best regards,

Eric G
