Cannot close tasks to update

R

We are having an issue where project managers cannot close tasks to update.
They get an error message that says they do not have permissions. Do not see
a reason for this based on their security settings. Administrators, however,
can close tasks. Any ideas?

Forgot to mention we are using 2007. Can get all the way to submit before
error message: Cannot lock selected task because of the following reason :
Access Denied.

Discovered that if I give Project Managers the Manage Time Tracking
permission then Close Tasks works. It is a workaround but not acceptable.
We do not want PMs to have access to Time Tracking.

One of the issues I discovered a long time ago with Project Server 2007 is
that the My Personal Projects category seems to interfer with some of the
other Group and Category permissions. If your project managers are not
using the Personal Activity plans available from the My Tasks page, then you
could safely remove the My Personal Projects category from the Project
Managers group and see if that resolves the issue. Just to be safe, before
you delete the Category from the Project Managers group, capture a
screenshot of the Permissions grid settings for that Category. Then see if
this helps. Let us know the results.

I have long since removed the My Personal Projects category from the PM
group. Any other ideas?

Are your PM's only members of the Project Managers group? If not, remove
them from other groups. In addition, navigate to the definition for the
Project Managers group and then scroll in the Global Permissions grid near
the bottom of the page. Locate the Time and Task Management section and
make sure the "Close Tasks to Updates" permission is set to Allow. Let us
know if this helps.

They are in the Project Manager group and the Team Member group. Close Tasks
to Update is set to Allow. I tested taking a PM out of the Team Member group
and still had the same issue. Next?

I've run out of ideas. Perhaps someone else has an idea for you. Sorry I
can't be more help.

What will happen when you do as follows?
In my case, this solved the similar problem.

Log on PWA with System account and ...

(1) open 'Server Settings' page.
(2) click 'Active Directory Resource Pool Synchronization' link.
(3) click 'Save and Synchronize Now' button without making any changes.
(4) Wait at least 10 mins.

Another idea is to force PWA (Project Web Access) application to be
re-complied.
If you edit web.config file for PWA in the way not to influence users'
operation, e.g. change compilation mode to debug mode, then PWA application
will be re-built.

After PWA application rebuilt, access denied error troubles might be solved.

I have sent your instructions to our tech support guy - he is the one that
did the installation, etc.

I did find that adding the Time Management permission to the PM group fixed
the problem. However, it gave them access to changing how tasks are updated,
how Timesheets are set up, etc. Too much permissions for a PM. I think we
are living with the restriction unless your idea works. Thank you.
