Cannot close Word 2007, without crashing.

I'm using MS Word 2007 and upon closing the application, Word
crashes and reopens itself. If I try to close it, it will crash again and
say "Close the Program" and says Microsoft will let me know when it finds the
solution.

I have had this program installed for 8 mos and it was fine all that time;
but this problem started to appear from 3 days ago. That night, I had a Word
document open when I went to bed. My laptop went thru auto windows update
that night and restarted itself. Since then, I am having this problem.

Please help with any information that will fix my issue.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.

Thanks,

Hari

Have you got an HP printer set as the default?

What happens if you start in Safe Mode? From Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Can you now open a document, edit it, safe and close Word
without it crashing?

The exact same thing happens to me.

Just about every single time I close out of Word (and sometime other Office
programs as well, but mainly Word since that's what I use most), it crashes,
and reopens Word if I do not hit "Cancel"/"Ok" in time.

My operating system is also Vista, and I do have an HP printer set as my
default. One time, the Windows Solutions said that the HP printer was causing
a problem and I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and made sure
I had all the current updates for it, but the problem still occurs.

Several months ago, I even contacted Dell regarding the problem (first I
contacted Microsoft and they said it sounded like a Dell problem), but Dell
was unable to solve the problem after hours and days of over the phone
technical support.

So I am just really unsure what to try next.

Hi,

Just unselect the HP printer as the default one. Select another and when you
have to print, select the HP printer. Do it each time you have to print.
It's the only solution. It's a problem with the HP drivers with Office 2007.

Hope that help you.

It is the HP printer driver. Report this to HP.

Please don't steal another person's post: create your own posting as now the
original poster will be confused because he may not have an HP printer.

Hi Terry:

Thanks for the reply. I have Brother HL2140 laser printer. I tried
uninstalling and installing both MS Office and the printer drivers. But no
use. I still have the same issue.

Any other possible fixes? I appreciate everyone who replied my post

Regards
Hari

Hi Terry:

I saw many posts related to this problem. I get the feeling that this has
something to do with the latest Office auto update that occurred on my laptop
as my problem started after the autoupdate from Microsoft. Do you see any
possibility that same update is causing these problems for others? Can I undo
that revious update (if there was an update for Word)?

Thanks
Hari

Hi Terry:

I tried the winword /a option and I can quit safely. So, what is the
permanent solution fix for this without losing the value from Add on. How can
I identify the add-on that is causing this problem?

Please advise.

Thanks a bunch for the great help you guys provide.

I unselected the HP printer as my default printer, and the crash has not
occurred since!
I guess I should notify HP.

Thank you so much for your response, I appreciate it so much!

Before I unselected my HP printer as my default, I had also tried
uninstalling Office and reinstalling...that did not resolve the issue. So,
when I contacted Dell, they even completely uninstalled my operating system
off my computer, and then reinstalled (removed absolutely everything other
than what was on the computer when I purchased it). That also did not resolve
the problem.

I just now removed my HP printer as my default today, and the crash has not
occurred since then.
