Cannot compact a database in Access 97

Does anyone know what I can do to compact a database?
When I try to do it, the error states that it is opened
exclusively. I'm the only one in the file. I can use
the file, but I cannot compact it.

Do you have the database on a network? If not, try rebooting your machine
and then opening the database and immediately compacting it.
There is a better compact utility out there,
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;295334. Try using
that.
