Cannot connect to the configuration database

Hello

I installed SPS 2003 and then Project Server 2003. I've applied the
three updates to get Project Server 2003 SP1 applied. All has went
well, except that now I'm ready to start configuring Project Server and
when I choose "Configure Microsoft Office Project Server" from the
program menu on the local server, I get the "Cannot connect to the
configuration database". I've verified that the SQL server that I'm
connecting to is correct (conninfo). Also typed it via IP instead of
DNS, and that didn't matter. Can someone give me some pointers here on
most logical next best steps please?

TIA!

When you say "SPS" do you mean SharePoint Portal Server, or did you install
WSS or Windows SharePoint Services. If you did, in fact, install SPS, then
you need to read the KB article on how to get this and Project Server happy
on the same machine. Search on "Portal Server and Project Server" to find
the article in the KB. If you installed WSS, and then installed Project
Server to the same website, then you need to add the Project Server path to
the exclusions list in SharePoint's managed paths. You can do this through
SharePoint Central Administration.

It also sounds like you may not have read the installation guide carefully
or thoroughly. You might want to curl up with it tonight as bedtime reading.

Hi Gary

I did install Sharepoint Portal Server. I also followed the steps
involved (same KB article you brought up) in having both Project Server
and Sharepont installed....

Maybe you can dig up some errors from the server application event log that
could help steer the conversation. Without more to go on, there's not much
more that we can offer.

Good call Gary. I see two of these errors in event view each time I
attempt to go into the Project Server configuration...

"#50070: Unable to connect to the database Sharepoint_Config_db_01 on
<SQLSERVER>. Check the database connection information and make sure
that the database server is running."

You need to go to SharePoint Central Administration on the Server and add
the Project Server virtual directory and, possibly the MDAC directory to the
exclusions in SharePoint's managed paths.

That fixed it!

One more question, in PWA - in my home page, the Risks and Issues items
list "There is a problem establishing a connection with the Web server
running Windows SharePoint Services. Contact your system
administrator."

Any ideas?

Go back to the installation guide and make sure that you executed the setup
correctly. It doesn't appear that you followed this very closely the first
time around.
