Cannot convert Excel worksheet to Access table

I want to convert an Excel worksheet to an Access table.
I am running Office 97 Pro on a Windows XP Home system.
When I try to convert from within Excel I get a message
that the Wizard cannot open the file. When I try to
import from within Access the process also fails. The
proper converters do not seem to be present. So I tried
to find the "Valupak" on Microsoft's website and find it
is superceded by Office 2003 Toolkit beta. I downloaded
and installed that and ran the converter installation
section--all to no avail. Because both Excel 97 and
Access 97 give Dbase IV as a format they both can read I
also tried using this format as an intermediary, still
with no luck. Any suggestions how I can get my data from
Excel to Access?

It's a real pain but I am managing to convert Excel to
Access record by record using drag and drop following
Knowledge Base Article 141491. According to Knowledge
Base Article 159157, XL97 Convert to MS Access is a known
problem (and the suggested fix did not work for me--still
got something about file does not exist or not in right
format). So if anyone else wants to do such a
conversion, I recommend drag and drop.
