Cannot convert or enable database

I am trying to open a database designed in Access 97 and am getting the
message "The Current user account doesn't have permission to convert or
enable this database". I have tried the resolutions suggested at

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/288960/

but I cannot get the database to open. The KB states to "Remove the Admin
account from the Admins group" but Access won't let me do this. Nothing else
in the article works.

I tried to import the objects into a new database but I only get the tables
and queries. When I try to import the forms and reports I get the message
"You don't have permission to import, export, or link to (Form/Report)." I am
currently logged in as Admin, but the Admin user/group does not have
permissions to 'Modify Design' or 'Read/Update/Insert/Delete Data'. Those
boxes are grayed out for Database, Form, & Report Objects. Is that normal? It
does not prevent me from modifying anything in any other database.

Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like you're working with the A97 database without the
workgroup file (*.mdw). That's why you're not having much success. You
need to find that workgroup file, and the username/password of a user
in the Admins group. When you join that workgroup or specify it on
your shortcut's command line (the /wrkgrp switch), you will get access
to all objects.

Unfortunately it did not come with a mdw file. It is a demo db in the
Platinum Edition of Using Access 97. There are no mdw files on the CD. It has
its own install program and the only thing copied was the mdb file. I was
able to open it years ago. Is there no other way to access it?

Which file are you having trouble with. I just tested every file on the CD and had no problems. None of the demos are secured.

Sounds like the OP has experimented with Access-level security, rather
than first downloading, studying, and fully understanding the Access
Security FAQ from microsoft.com

OK, after installing that one, I see that it is secured. The vendor didn't provide the development mdw it was secured with; as a user you are meant to use it with the standard system.mdw.

The demo is in 97, and given your initial message, I take it you are trying to open it using a newer version. You won't be able to.

I suggest you contact the vendor to see if they have an upgraded version of it.
