Cannot copy between 2 Word Versions

I have MS Word v4 (for DOS: yes, it is old but works fine) and also MS Word
with Office 97, both running on Windows XP. I can't copy and paste between
these 2 programs. Clipboard only works by itself in the DOS version, and vice
versa for Word 97. Why is this? I used to run both of these programs on
Windows 98 and this function worked fine. I tried the 98 compatibility option
for both and it didn't help. Does anyone have a suggestion?
