Cannot Delete / Item is Locked

I just trasfered some Word files from a floppy disc onto my iBook. The
problem is that, for some reason, they all show up as Read Only files. They
are now stuck on my desktop and I can't delete them, I just get this
message:

The operation cannot be completed because the item "file.doc" is locked.


Does anybody know how I can unlock these files?

Right Click on the doc icon and select properties -
uncheck read only.
