Cannot Delete or Open for Modification xls file

We have an xls file which is locked for updating by a user. The user is not
using the file. We have restarted all computers in our system and still
cannot open the file for modification, rename it, delete it or move it to
another directory. It appears to be invulnerable to any attack. We have
already made a copy of the file which works normally but we need to know how
we can get rid of this file.

Since you didn't tell us which operating system or version of Excel you're
using, we can't answer.
