I reinstalled the latest printer driver for the printer they have onsite. that did not fix it
but then i rebooted the machine and that fixed it.
i know it sounds stupid, but have you tried rebooting?

updating printer drivers didnt fix the problem either. im completely at a
loss, and the microsoft support system is refusing to work atm.
It may indicate a corrupt normal.dot or a corrupt printer driver.
It may indicate a corrupt normal.dot or a corrupt printer driver. The latter
is highly likely
Check that you have the latest printer driver and then delete and reinstall
the printer
If it is still the same, rename normal.dot as normal.bad

Well that may indicate a corrupt font. Is it always the same font that you
are trying to switch to or is that with ALL fonts? Is it ALL documents or
just one document? Does it happen in Safe Mode

FYI... opening a document now after i returned from safe mode has not spat

If it is OK in Safe Mode, then it points to an incompatible third party add-in.

add-in. You need to isolate the add-in and then see if there is an update
for it. See how to find add-in

ok. so that didnt last long. the error is back in full force. there are no
add ins listed as active. the only thing i can think of is that adobe wanted
me to do some updates, but i hit delete all, because frankly it annoys the
crap out of me whenever that window pops up. but i went back in and did an
update and nothing. error is still there
