Cannot download and install updates KB890829 and KB873352.

I have the same problem. 2 PCs on the network--one updates fine, the other
shows an error when trying to run Office Update. I've tried safe mode,
deleting IE cache, etc--can't get Office Update to work. It worked before
this weekend, and Windows Update works fine. Even an attempted manual
install of these two updates fails with a Hotfix Installer error.

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer. This
may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office
Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try
running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation
completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If
the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows
Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information

Search for Office updates in the Download Catalog

Thanks! I didn't save the KB number, but I already tried all of those
recommendations. No luck. Thanks anyway for your help.

I cannot install the updates KB890829 and KB873352 either.
I receive the message 'Installation unsuccessful', and I see in the OHotfix
file the '1648 error'. This is an extract:

I'm getting the EXACT same error...i cant find any solutions on the
net...does anyone know of any solutions? I've even tried a windows re-format
and install(I was due for one anyway)

I've solved the problem by format hard disc and reinstall the Windows XP,
then SP1, then all updates availables in Windows Update and Office Update,
included KB890829 and KB873352, and at the end, the SP2.
