Cannot drag tab and indent markers

For some reason that I can't understand, it's suddenly become very difficult
to alter the format of a paragraph by dragging the indent and tab markers in
the ruler in Word 2003. I have to go through the Format Paragraph screen to
make the changes I want which is laborious and through accurate is
frustrating.

Any thoughts, anyone?
