Cannot draw any graphic lines/shapes in 2003

Hi Nancy LaPonzina;

The reason why you cannot draw any line or shapes is because, you have not
selected any element from the Autoshape list - Line, connectors, basic shape,
Block Arrows, Flow Chart, Stars and Banners, Callouts and so on. Select one
of these elements, and then choose the type of elements you need, and draw on
the open document. Unless you draw on the document, you will not be able to
edit it using the Change Autoshape, under the Draw list in the Drawing
toolbar.

Thanks Challa but I still can't draw any line or shapes even if I select an
element from the Autoshape list. I'm trying to add a line to a footer and
place a page number beneath the line. I never had this problem before
upgrading to Word 2003.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled without luck.

The usual way to have a "line" in the footer is to add a paragraph border.

Hmmm. How would I add a paragraph border as a line in a footer? That may be
a way around this until our IT can figure it out. They're working on it now
and are having a difficult time.
Thanks.

Select the footer paragraph, go to Format | Borders and Numbering and add a
(top?) border of the desired weight, style, and color. In the Options dialog
you can specify the distance from text. Note that the line will be the same
width as the paragraph. If you need one that goes right across the page,
then an AutoShape is a better choice (though this *can* be done with a
border).

Thanks so much. This will work!
