cannot drop at current location

Suddenly and inexplicably when I try to drag and drop I
get the message "cannot drop at current location"
accompanied with a symbol that looks like a "do not
smoke" sign. I made sure under Tools > Options > Edit
that drag and drop options was turned on. what is going
on here?

We'll probably never know. The first recourse, though, whenever you get a
Word problem that is totally mysterious and intractable is to quit and
restart Word. If that doesn't clear the problem, then you restart Windows.
It's amazing how many transient problems that solves!
