cannot empty the clipboard

in excel 2003 when i try to copy a cell or multiple cells
via the keyboard shortcut, or right click or Edit...Copy,
and again the same when i try to cut, I receive the error
message "Cannot empty the clipboard". Major annoyance when
I am copying and pasting on huge spreadsheets. Please help.
