cannot enable automatic spell checking

hi, I recently upgraded from Office X to Office 2004 on an iMac
running Panther. Selecting Grammar & Spelling in preferences does
bring a window with spelling options in the upper panel and grammar
options in the lower panel, but all options about spelling are grayed
out and unavailable, except for one box, "Use German post-reform
rules", which I can click on or off. All the rest, including selection
and creation of personal dictionaries, are unavailable. This was
working find with Word X on the same machine. Any idea how to turn
this on?

Word 2004 v 11.1
Mac OS X 10.3.7 (was the same under 10.3.6)

Okay, this is totally a wild guess, but it kind of sounds like your text
must be in German. If that isn't your intention, select your text and
choose Tools > Language and change it to English. Does that make things
any better? m.
