Cannot engage High Standard Printing

N

Nakoda

I have had a major session with Canon to troubleshoot this problem and
reinstalled and upgraded the printer's application and drivers. No luck.

What occurs is that when I print an existing Workbook sheet I cannot
within the program [EXCEL 2008] cannot click on the High Standard printing.
Instead, I can only use the Standard Setting. This results in the print-out
too faint to read properly.

I have opened a new document to perform test runs. On the first print-out
session, I can engage the High Setting, but on subsequent print-outs using
the same 'test' doc - same thing occurs.

I have several times opened a new Workbook, cut-pasted the existing
Workbook's individual sheets but no luck. I have one older file existing and
this one will always print out at the High Setting.

It will mean mega hours for me to use this older existing file to place
numerous spreadsheets into this document and also do the reformatting.

I have contacted the JustAnswer MacMedic techies, but the one assigned to me
could not provide a solution. I use EXCEL extensively and have never had this
problem before. I have Snow Leopard but at first this did not occur, but now
it does.

I need help!

Do you have Office 2008 fully updated to 12.2.3? I remember seeing similar
issues involving retention of printer settings earlier on but AFAIK the
problems have been resolved by updates.

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "within the program" but if you're
referring to Page Setup that may be a problem. Printer settings are a
function of the driver as supplied via the OS. See if you can make the
preferred settings via the options in the Copies & Pages list of the Print
dialog.

I have the same problem as described by Nakoda. I am using Office 12.2.3 and, like Nakoda, I am using a Canon printer model MX-310. I am unable to specify High quality printing in the print dialog box and find the text and graphics on my spreadsheets to print so faint that they almost cannot be read.

I thought that the problem may be in an unintentional change in the style or theme of the spreadsheet but was unable to resolve the problem with changes in these areas.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, despite what Canon told Nakoda, I find it interesting that the only
reports of a similar nature are both coming from users of Canon printers.

Applications programs have absolutely nothing to say about what is or isn't
presented in the Print dialog or whether it works. The dialog is presented
by the OS based on the level of print service requested by the app & it's
the responsibility of the selected printer's driver software to populate the
controls. The app simply calls for the service. Likewise, it's my
understanding that what appears in Excel's File> Page Setup - Page dialog re
Print Quality is determined by the driver's offerings as well, but that the
settings in the Print dialog, itself, override that setting anyway.

All I can suggest is that you confirm that Office (12.2.3) and OS X (10.6.2)
are fully updated. In fact, it may not be a bad idea to fetch the OS X
10.6.2 COMBO update from Apple Downloads & reapply it over the existing
update even if you're already at that level -- the Combos are much more
thorough than what is delivered by Software Update. Then repair disk
permissions permissions followed by a restart.

The only other remote factor I can conceive of is a faulty Excel .plist
file. As a last resort you might try deleting that (while Excel is _not_
running) to see if that makes any difference.
