cannot enter a long series of numbers without excel changing them.

Excel's default is to display large numbers using scientific notation.
That is what you are seeing.

You can easily change the formatting for the cell or cells in which you
wish to display a full number. Select the cell or cell range you wish to
format. Then, on the Formatting Palette (click Toolbox on the standard
toolbar to open and close the toolbox), in the Number section, Click the
Format pop-up. Choose Custom (the option at the bottom of the list).

In the Format Cells dialog box, in the left side under Category, click
Custom. On the right side, click the first item, which is 0 (zero). Then
click OK to close the Format Cells dialog box.

.... Or just go to Format> Cells, select Number rather than General & pick
your decimal place display.
