Cannot enter text in a new text box

After creating a text box using the drawing toolbar, it is impossible
to actually enter text. The screen cursor remains pointing to the
right instead of to the left. No combination of keystrokes seems to
make any difference.

The only workaround is to paste in a text box from a previous Word
document. The pasted text box is fine and can be edited.

This was a intermittent problem with Word X, but is now a permanent
problem since I installed Office 2004.

Could it be something to do with templates?

Thanks in advance for any ideas how to fix this.

Hi Steve:

This is likely to be a corrupted OLE store, and it could be in either your
document or in the template from which you created the document, which would
be your Normal template unless you specified something else.

Try doing a Maggie: Carefully select all except the last paragraph marker
and copy to a new document. If that did not fix it, replace your normal
template and try again. Be careful with your selection: if you copy the
last paragraph marker, you copy the problem.

To replace the Normal template, Word must be Quit, not just minimised, and
you must either drag Normal to the desktop, or trash it then empty the
trash.

Cheers
