Cannot find file in Word or Excel

When I attempt to open an earlier version of a Word or Excel file, with
Office 2007, for the first time after a restart, I recieve an error that says
that the file cannot be found. The error only occurs if Word or Excel hasn't
been opened and is being opened by double clicking on the file. The error
message occurs and the application stays open. I can then close the error
message, re-click on the file and it will open because the application is now
open. In otherwords, the application doesn't recognize earlier version of the
file unless the application is already opened prior to opening the file.

This doesn't work. I see that there are several other posts that have the
same problem. The following is an excerpt from one of the posts:

Thanks PokerAddict, but unfortunately it wasn't a solution for me. I get the
same response. If I right click on the doc, then on Edit, I still get the
"Windows cannot find ..." message. If I then minimise Word, right click on
the doc and select "Edit" again, the doc opens.
