cannot find shell.dll

I am using Microsoft 97 on Windows XP and when I try to load additional
programs from the CD, I get the error message "cannot find shell.dll". I
tried to remove Word and Excel that I already have loaded and start over but
I get the same error message when I try to remove these programs too"
Can anyone help me?
