Cannot Fix/Reinstall/Remove Pub 2000 Get "Error 1336"

My "Mail Merge" function in Publisher 2000 just quit working. I got the message "Components to perform mail merge not installed". I attempted to "Fix", "Reinstall", and "Remove" Publisher 2000 but it quits every time giving the message "Error 1336 - there was an error creating a temporary file that is needed to complete the installation," then reverses the install and finally messages: "Installation ended prematurely because of an error." What is an error 1336? I can't find it anywhere on the MS database. Does anyone know what's wrong with this and how to fix it? Running Win 98SE, Pentium III 500 Mhz, 353 MB RAM; and this has never happened before.

To identify more detail about where the temporary file cannot be created- and what
error is being returned. Turn on Windows Installer logging and attempt the operation
again.

If the temporary file already exists, delete it- it has been reported that creating a
temporary file when one exists (possibly in a locked or otherwise unknown state) can
result in this error.

Ms. Sauer:

Attempted to reply in detail to your message to your email
address as contained in yourmessage, but my message to you
bounced, with the message "unrouteable mail
domain "mycolumbus.rr.com".

I did all of what you suggested, but cannt resolve the
problem and now the program mscuu2.exe that I downloaded
and ran to fix the installer appears to have completely
removed the Publisher 2000 program itself. Please advise
privately to me at: (e-mail address removed) or to
(e-mail address removed) if you know of any way to fix this problem.
Thge message I sent included much more in detail including
the contents of the installer log files, which I can send
you, if you need to examine them. Thank you. Joe D.
