Cannot get multilevel numbering to work in Word 2007

Hi,

I am writing a report in Word (2007) and I have defined heading 1 as the
following:

"Font: (Default) Arial, 14 pt, Bold, English (U.K.), Indent: Left: 0 cm,
Hanging: 0.63 cm, Level 1, Tab stops: 0.63 cm, List tab + 7.14 cm, List
tab, Numbered + Level: 1 + Numbering Style: 1, 2, 3, . + Start at: 1 +
Alignment: Left + Aligned at: 6.5 cm + Tab after: 7.14 cm + Indent at:
7.14 cm, Style: Quick Style, Based on: Normal, Following style: Normal

That works well and I have 7 sections/chapters with heading 1 in my
document. One of these sections is starting to get a bit large so I thought
I'd break it down into sub-sections. It took me a while to figure out where
heading 2 was, but after a bit of internet searching I managed to ge it
unearthed (why did they have to make it so difficult, god knows). What I
would like to do know is modify that style to be numbered so that for
example, the first sub-section in section 3 would be "3.1. blah blah blah".
"

I have tried everything I could possibly think of, but it won't recongize
the preivous numbering, I can only get it to display 1. or 1.1. (in section
3). When I try to force it using right-click -> set numbering value,
continue from previous list, nothing happens. If I then try to check the
"Advance value (skip numbers)" option, and set the value correctly to 3.1.,
it displays correctly, but creates 3 blank headings 1., 2. and 3.
beforehand. If I delete them, it goes back to 1.1. I have also tried
applying the heading 1 style and then increasing the indent, but that just
reverts it to a bulleted list. If I then try to change it to a numbered
list, it starts at 1.1. and removes all the numberings for the section
titles with the heading 1 style!!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Arnaud

Updated: got it working following the instructions there:
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/numbering-headings-in-word-2007-multilevel-lists0.html

What a pain!! I remember fondly my student days when I was using LaTeX...

The quickest way in Word 2007 to get "1, 1.1, 1.1.1" numbering with the
built-in headings is to do the following: On the Home tab, click Multilevel
List, and then choose the "1 Heading 1 1.1 Heading 2 1.1.1 Heading 3"
built-in list format.

To apply a heading to text, you can use the Apply Styles pane (which you can
display by pressing Ctrl+Shift+S). Just type in the style name and click the
Apply button.

Would you please help me?

I find an article about equation numbering
(http://blogs.msdn.com/microsoft_office_word/archive/2006/10/20/equation-numbering.aspx)

Here is the video demo.
http://www.jonesxml.com/jobailor/insernumberedequation/insernumberedequation.html

My problem is when Set Numbering Value, the numbers before current number
will appear automatically (I don't konw how to describe it, the pictures
below show the problem better).

thanks a lot.

If you are trying to create equation numbers that include the chapter, you
will have to make sure that Heading 1 and whatever style you are using for
your equation numbers are both part of the same multilevel list.

Thanks. I will try harder to make it out.
The video demo does it so easy that make me believe that maybe there were
some settings that I didn't see.

I'm also going crazy with the above. My multilevel list which should read
1 correct
1.1
1.2
2
2.1
2.3

doesn't it reads as follows
1 correct
1.1 correct
2.1 incorrect
3.1 incorrect
2 correct
1.2 incorrect
2.2 correct
3.2 incorrect

I've tried creating a new multilevel list, I've had computer people over
who've deleted and reinstalled my Word but it keeps my changed settings plus
the above.
I just cannot get the numbering to update within a level.

I've been trying some of these suggestions to no avail. Any more suggestions.
Thanks

For your level 2, it seems as if the current level number and the included
level 1 number have been reversed. To fix that: Place the insertion point in
the first level 1 paragraph of your list (for heading numbering, this means
the first Heading 1 of the document). Click Home tab | Multilevel List |
Define New Multilevel List. Click level 2. Clear the contents of the "Enter
formatting for number" box, and then recreate those contents by adding level
1 numbering via the "Include level number from" box, typing in the period,
and adding the numbering for the current level via "Number style for this
level." When you are done, click OK to close the dialog box.
