Cannot get office updates to work

I have been trying for 2 weeks to get office updates to work. I keep getting
--

The Office Update Catalog cannot be displayed, and
The Office Update site is currently experiencing some technical difficulties
and is unable to check for updates.

I don't buy it. What gives?

I have Office 2003 Professional edition. I followed the procedures. The
active X one (method 4) doesn't work at all and now I get the web site-
"http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/FX010329501033.aspx AND I still can't get
into updates.
The windows Installer Cleanup utility only works with the standard edition
of Office 2003. I did not see the professional version listed.

So when you tried Method 4, and you get to the
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/FX010329501033.aspx page, does your
screen look like the first example on that page or not? I can't see
your screen from here. Follow the instructions on that page depending
on whether the answer is yes or no.

The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility works with all versions of Office.
Use it to delete the Windows Installer entry related to Office 2003,
reboot, and then try the OfficeUpdate site again.

I'm a bit unclear about the Windows Installer cleanup. I've downloaded it.
It looks like it uninstalls whatever product is selected. Meaning I will
need to reinstall Office 2003 Basic and then Professinal?

Also in answer to your other question - my answer was 'no', and it didn't
work either as it kept cycling me back to Office updates, which is why I'm
having problems to start with.

You obviously didn't read the instructions for the Windows Installer
Cleanup Utility, which say:

"The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does not:
• Remove Windows Installer.
• Remove files of any programs that are installed by Windows Installer,
such as Microsoft Office 2003."

What part of the above statement says the cleanup utility "uninstalls
whatever product is selected"?

I think you should more carefully read and follow the instructions in
the original article to which I referred you, and also more carefully
read and follow the instructions for the Windows Installer Cleanup
Utility. Or pay a professional to fix your computer for you if you
don't want to read or follow the instructions.

No, I DID read it. When an application is selected, the 'remove' button is
the that is supposed to be selected. To me 'remove' means just that. It
will remove the application. How else do you define the word remove?
Otherwise, one jsut 'exits' the installer without doing anything.

I did a search on Microsoft's web site for the file and it didn't find it. I
am hesistant to download a file that I know nothing about and what it is
expected to do. Where can I find information about the file?

Hi Jill,

The download information page for the
standalone Windows Script Host v5.6 Engine is at
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c717d943-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa

You may have that version already installed on your PC,
(it's part of Internet Explorer 6.0) but it may have
become corrupted and may need a repair of
Internet Explorer 6. The standalone update is also one
that can cause problems with Windows 2000 multilanguage
editions

Will the windows script host v5.6 engine work for an office update
freeze problem? Office XP, can't update.

The email from Shelly was empty.

Also, I tried the suggestion from Bob Buckland. It didn't do anything that
I didn't already have. Still keep getting the same viscious cycle that I've
been getting all along. And YES, I do have msn as an 'allowed' site inthe
security zone.

Cannot get office updates to work

Usually if anyone cannot get the Office 2003 updates to fully install
properly, there is a corruption in the registry. There is simple solution
though. Merely go to Control Panel and highligh Office 2003. Then click on
CHANGE. On the next screen simply click on REPAIR. After the application is
fully repaired successfully, go back to Office Update and download and
install the updates.

Spiderman - I ALREADY did 'detect and repair'. What is your point? It STILL
doens't work.

Downloading scripten.exe from the site noted by Phil worked for me with
office XP, having tried all the other remedies suggested.

Hello all.
Like jillca I have had this office update problem for some time. I thought
Phil had the solution with the scripten.exe download but on downloading it
from his suggested site, there is no change to the problem.
Is it possible there is more than one correction needed here? Are there
other suggestions to combine with scripten.exe?
