Cannot Get Word 2000 to Load

For the last two years, I've had Windows XP Pro and Microsoft Office 2000 Pro
installed and running without a hitch, but about two weeks ago, I suddenly
found myself unable to open Word, regardless of if I tried to access it
through a shortcut, through the Start Menu, or by opening a document. (It
locks up on a mostly gray screen with the Word box, and will stay that way
indefinitely until I force the application to close.) When I try run Word in
Safe Mode, I get the following error: "The program associated with the
selected template cannot be started, or the program cannot use the supported
template."

In the last week I have used the repair function on the Office disc numerous
times, and have reinstalled Word and/or Office in its entirety after cleaning
the old one off my file at least a dozen times, but the problem persists so I
don't think it's Word/Office, but Windows-related. Using the most recent
version of Norton, my computer came back with a clean bill of health, so it
doesn't appear to be a bug. I followed an online tutorial that stated the
problem may be caused by corrupted temp files, and have since deleted them
from my system, but still the same.

Memory is definitely not a problem, and as far as I can recall, I hadn't
installed any new programs around the time of the lock-up. I was told the
problem may be the result of a conflict with a recent Windows Update (I have
all critical updates immediately installed), but I have no evidence of this
and know very little about these in general.

Yesterday, out of desperation, I contacted Ingenio's tech support
department. After half an hour, they had optimized my computer, but we were
no closer to finding a solution to my inability to access Word. They
suggested that I install MS Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 since I
apparently didn't have it, but that didn't do the trick. (After this failed,
I updated it to Service Pack 2, but still no luck.)

I depend on Windows greatly, but cannot afford to upgrade (which is what
Microsoft strongly suggests). I would think that it's something simple that
can be rectified, since I had no problems until only a few weeks ago.

If anyone needs any info I may have overlooked, please let me know. Thanks
