cannot get word to consistently use singlespace when typing a poem

I have my style set on single space, and if I type in prose it's fine. But I'm a poet, and I have to end lines before I reach the margin and this latest Word always makes that a double space when I want the entire poem to be singled-spaced. I can do a "hard space" to make it stay a single space, but it is irritating because I have to do it for EVERY LINE. I never ever used to have to do this.

Can anyone help? Is there any way to keep single space even when you are ending in the middle of a line? I have tried everything I can think of including changing the style, but nothing helps.

Thanks!

One option is to further modify whatever "style" you've set to single line
spacing to also remove what's set for Space After/Before in the Paragraph
formatting.

Another option is to use line breaks rather than paragraph breaks in order
for all lines -- at least those in the same stanza -- to be a part of the
same paragraph. Just use the return key to denote the end of one
paragraph/stanza to start another.

You're right that changing a style after the fact will not convert paragraph
breaks to line breaks, but Find & Replace using its Special feature will.
