cannot group dates in pivot table

I have imported data form an access database into excel.
This data includes dates and events. I have put the dates
into the row section of a pivot table and want to group
the dates by 10 years. When I right click on the date
field and choose group I get the message 'cannot group
that selection'. Can anybody tell me where I am going
wrong please?
I am using Excel and access 2002
