Cannot group that selection

I often get the "Cannot group that selection" error when working with pivot
tables in Excel and trying to group data by month, quarter, year etc. The
Knowledge base says to remove blank lines from the data. I've tried this, as
well as removing all blank cells, but still get the same error.

In a list of dates you must ensure that you have no blanks and no text
values. EVERY value in that field must contain a valid date if you are to
group.
