Cannot import Excel file into Access 2003

I want to import an excel 2003 spreadsheet into access 2003. I know the
correct procedure to do this: File/GetExternalData/Import and i choose the
location that i want to import the .xls file from.
When I pull down the "files of type" list, it only lets me choose from .mdb
file types or xml file types..no .xls or even "all files." I did a complete
reinstall of Office 2003 and choose any and every feature that is has and it
still cannot see .xls file type option on the Import window... please help

Did you try saving your Excel spreadsheet as a *.xml, then importing?

I tried that before... But I am not getting the data in that table format if
I import from XML.
Any other suggestion?
Thanks for your Attention.

AP:

The xls format should be available if you'd install the components during
the install process (I believe that it is under the Office Options not under
Access directly.) If you did that and they are still not available, then
there's probably a problem with the registry on that machine where it fails
to indicate that the XL ISAM is installed. You might want to try to
download the latest Jet service release (Jet 4 SP8) and install that and see
if it resolves your issue.
