Cannot import Excel spreadsheets into Access 2003

A user of mine is running Access 2003 on a new Windows XP computer. He's
going through his usual import procedure (File >> Get External Data >>
Import). He drills down and selects spreadsheet he wants to import from,
clicks 'Import' and gets a message saying:

'The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object
"Spreadsheet$". Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and
the path name correctly.'

Using my own machine with Access 2003, I'm able to import the data to this
database from these spreadsheets with no problem. My machine is running
11.6355.6408 (SP1) while is is the more updated 11.6566.6568 (SP2).

This leads me to believe there's a problem with his Access (or Excel)
settings. In the Visual Basic Editor he has checked VB For Applications, MS
Access 11.0 Object Library, OLE Authentication, MS ActiveX Data Objects 2.1
Library, MS Excel 11.0 Object Library, and the MS DAO 3.6 Object Library.

Has anyone seen this behavior? Any advice is much appreciated....

Jay
