Cannot input into cell

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I have the problem noted by Dan Brotsky on 30 Sept last year see <http://www.officeformac.com/ProductForums/Excel/2785>

I have 12.1.5, I have repaired permissions, trashed the plists, deinstalled Office and reinstalled, restarted Mac, all to no avail. I copied the file to my Air and the file works OK on there, so it's not the file itself.

The Mac misbehaved after trying to sync a Shuffle (renaming file caused a string of letters to appear, had to restart) but the restart seemed to fix this. This problem could be related, no other symptoms.

Excel is unusable on my iMac now. Any suggestions? Anything at all?

No offense, but that original post referred to a completely different version
of the OS, Office & breed of Mac (PPC), so even though the symptoms are
similar there's no justification for concluding that it's the same illness...
just because one has a fever doesn't mean it's malaria :) AFAIK, Dan never
did supply any system information & failed to respond to the reply from a
member of MacBU requesting further details on the reported problem which they
had been unable to reproduce under any testing conditions. If we can't get
you on the right track perhaps you'll be kind enough to pick up where that
other post left off over 6 months ago - it apparently is not a wide-spread
issue but seems to be rather uncommon. That doen't make it any more tolerable
for those who do experience it, of course.

The first suggestion is to go to the Apple Downloads site & retrieve the OS
X 10.5.3 Combo Update - the Combos are far more reliable than what Software
Update spews forth. While you're there check to see if there are any hardware
or firmware updates for you model of Mac - there have been quite a few over
the last year for virtually every model, inlcuding keyboard firmware updates.
Repair permissions & do a cold restart afterwards.

If the problem persists log in while holding the Shift Key in order to
bypass any background processes that might be interfering with the program.
Reply with your results - psoitive or negative.

The problem has gone away: all on its own!

I have not installed anything new. Inexplicable. For information, I had already done the update check and repaired permissions before your reply. If it happens again I will try the safe boot and post again.

Thank you for your time.
