Cannot insert a cgm file into Word 2002 SP3

From:

Article ID 290362, The limitations of graphics import filters in Word 2003
and in Word 2002

I followed the instructions in the "Install a Non-Installed Graphics Filter"
section, and the installation appeared to be successful, without any error
messages. However, this did not solve the problem.

Then it ocurred to me that, although the instructions do not say so, and no
error message or warning message was displayed, it is necessary to have the
Word or Office installation CD loaded into the CD drive for the installer to
find the files to install.

Is that correct? If not, what have I missed?

Are you looking in the right place for the filter?

C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Grphflt

I have no idea.

The Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/Microsoft Word 2002/Change/Add or
remove features/Microsoft Office/Office Shared Features/Converters and
Filters/Graphics Filters/CGM File Import sequence does not allow browsing for
a file. I used that sequence because it the one described in the KB article.

I did find 3 of the 4 files listed in the KB article (Cgmimp32.fnt,
Cgmimp32.cfg, Cgmimp32.flt) in the folder you describe. Even if I was able
to browse to that folder, I do not know if one file will result in the
installation of all 3, or whether each would have to be added individually.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 (laptop) with a 1.5 GHz Pentium M processor,
Windows XP/Pro SP2 and 2 GB RAM.

..cgm has changed muchly over the years. I don't think we are talking about the
same type files.
You might get some insight here

There is a MS.CGM in my filter folder as well as the three you mention. I cannot
get a .cgm image to open in any version of Office. I have installed filters from
every version Office I have, I still cannot get a cgm image to insert in a
Office document. So my help is pretty lame.

I can open .cgm format images in CorelDraw.

Hi Mary,

Are you using Word 2002 or 2003? If 2003 Service Pack 3 fixes an issue from Office 2003 SP2, but you may still need to make the
registry changes here

Hi Twriterext,

To add to Mary's reply in Word 2002 turn on the
'confirm conversions at open' choice in
Tools=>Options=>General
then in Insert=>Picture, turn on 'preview' view and try to insert specifically the test file, MS.CGM that should be in the \GrphFlt
folder, but may be in another location as well.
